Sunset Walk

The Sunset Walk took place on Sunday 14 September 2008. Around 500 people walked together, socialised and celebrated humankind. Thank you to everyone who took part, it was an amazing evening!
An evening event for everyone
This year saw the first Sunset Walk - the short stroll with a big heart. Around 500 people from all walks of life, took the chance to take part in the season of Ramadan. New friends were made, there was a lot of talking and a fairly generous amount of walking – and everyone has raised thousands so far to provide food for poor communities worldwide. Muslim Aid and Oxfam would like to thank everyone for their contributions.
“The whole thing was really well organised, a fun but at the same time peaceful, easy event. We set ourselves a target time of getting here within 2 hours but marched out and made it in just over an hour”
Yasmin Darr, Salma Gearay, Nadia Saddique and Anisa Darr
The route passed through royal parks in London including – St. James, Green Park and Hyde Park. And when the sun went down, a fabulously tasty meal was shared at the London Central Mosque.
About Ramadan
The month of Ramadan is a time for fasting, reflection, doing good things, and for spending time with family and friends. Throughout the month of Ramadan Muslims do not eat or drink during the hours of daylight.
This time of fasting reminds Muslims, among other things, that not everyone in the world has enough to eat. As well as fasting, people make charitable donations which will pay for food for poor communities around the world.
As Ramadan draws to a close everything steps up a gear and everyone prepares for a massive celebration to mark the end of the fast (Eid ul-Fitr). Lots of fun and food – and a good time for all. This year, Ramadan starts at the beginning of September – with the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations taking place from 1- 3 October.
