In El Salvador, Oxfam's focus is on sustainable livelihoods. We also campaign for fair trade rules and carry out emergency work.

Vulnerable to natural disasters

In 2001, two devastating earthquakes hit El Salvador less than a month apart. Nearly one million people were affected. In 2005, Hurricane Stan caused mudslides and flooding across the region.

Oxfam responded to both emergencies by providing clean water and carrying out health promotion. During these emergencies, and in their aftermaths, inadequate health supplies caused an acute health hazard.

How Oxfam is helping

Due to the effects of natural disasters in this region, we continue to focus our work in El Salvador on water and sanitation. We also provide training to poor farmers to help them grow enough food to make a proper living. Through our Make Trade Fair campaign we lobby for fairer trade rules worldwide.
