In Yemen, Oxfam's focus is on women's rights, education, health care, disaster preparedness, and helping people have a say in the decisions that affect them.

Strengthening women's rights

Yemen is one of the least-developed countries in the Arab world. The widespread lack of opportunities for women is contributing to the country's slow pace of development.

Female literacy stands at just 30 per cent, making it particularly hard for women to assert their legal and civil rights.

How Oxfam is helping

We raise poor women’s awareness of their legal rights and provide legal aid and counselling to support those who have fallen foul of the law. We also help fund schools to help more girls get an education and provide loans to women to help them set up small businesses as a source of income.

Yemen floods – 2008

The valleys of Hadramout, a Governorate in central Yemen, suffered 30 hours of solid rainfall around 25 October, resulting in severe flooding. Numbers of people affected are still hard to verify but between 10,000 and 20,000 people were made homeless when their mud houses collapsed.
