Oxfam's work in Bolivia in depth

Spanish version of this page

Oxfam works in Bolivia to make sure that poor people can make a sustainable living and that their concerns are heard and acted upon by policy and decision makers.

We are concentrating on the following work:

  • Programme for indigenous people in the lowlands: Strengthening the capabilities of indigenous organisations and leaders from the eastern region of the country, particularly the Chiquitano, so that they can defend their right to the territory in which they live, have access to and control of their natural resources, and exercise their civil and political rights.
  • Programme for indigenous people in the highlands: Working with rural communities and municipalities to enable poor communities to participate in political and financial activities, and to strengthen the involvement of women in local decision making
  • Urban programme in El Alto city: Strengthening organisations and stakeholders by promoting the civil rights of men and women. The programme supports advocacy activities at various levels of the urban environment. This work is linked with the Women’s Platform in Cochabamba.
  • National advocacy programme: Influencing strategic issues at national and international level, such as monitoring of international financial institutions, public policies, and the Bolivian Strategy for Poverty Reduction. It provides support to the national and international movement that searches alternatives to trade agreements, like the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) , so that they benefit the poorest. Oxfam also deals with issues related to employment, participatory budgets with a gender approach and strengthening of social control and transparency mechanisms.
  • Emergency response: Oxfam is also helping to strengthen the capacity of local people to respond to emergency situations caused by natural disasters, and to manage conflict in their communities.
