Oxfam's work in Honduras in depth
In Honduras, we have focused our work on sustainable livelihoods, risk prevention and good governance.
Sustainable livelihoods and risk prevention
The programme’s objective is to contribute to generating changes in policy and practice that will lead to a reduction in rural poverty. We hope to achieve:
- changes in national agricultural policies (mainly access to land and credit),
- changes in the means of production that will lead to diversifying income sources, food and local sustainability,
- gender equality,
- and risk management in communities where livelihoods, as well as human, lives could be threatened.
Additionally, the programme seeks to influence changes in the enforcement of the Labour Code in the maquila industry, the enforcement of environmental legislation in mine concessions and the incorporation of risk analysis in local development strategies.
Through the diverse projects in this programme we expect to benefit more than 480,000 people. At least 30,000 will benefit from direct activities through the development projects, where 40 per cent of the beneficiaries are women and 28.8 per cent are indigenous people.
Additionally, we expect 465,000 beneficiaries from our advocacy work and diverse campaigns on agrarian policy, land and territory, mining and labour rights issues.
Democracy, transparency, good governance and gender equity
This programme focuses on building a democracy based on the Rule of Law, democratic governance and citizen participation.
The specific areas of action will be:
- to monitor economic policies – foreign debt and poverty reduction strategies,
- social auditing,
- the defence of economic and social rights,
- the fight against impunity and corruption,
- and gender and ethnic issues.
It is estimated that this project will benefit 111,000 people.
The principal partners and allies that will work with us to achieve this objective at the local and national levels are Asonog, Fosdeh, Cofadeh, Visitacion Padilla, CEM H, CDM, CODEMUH, Interforos, Ocdih, CIPRODEH, La Central, CNTC, COMUCAP, COCOCH, CONIMCH, ODECO, and CEHPRODEC.
